What Is Card Grading?
Card grading is a professional service where a third-party company evaluates a trading card's physical condition and assigns it a numerical grade from 1 (Poor) to 10 (Gem Mint). The card is then sealed in a tamper-proof case - called a slab - with its grade permanently displayed.
Why It Matters
Grading transforms a trading card from a subjective collectible into an objectively scored asset. A PSA 10 (Gem Mint) 1st Edition Charizard Base Set sold for $420,000 in 2022. That same card in PSA 7 (Near Mint) condition? About $15,000. The grade isn't just a label - it's a 28x price multiplier.
By the Numbers
The three major grading companies are PSA (Professional Sports Authenticator), BGS (Beckett Grading Services), and CGC (Certified Guaranty Company). PSA dominates the Pokemon market with an estimated 70%+ market share. Standard PSA grading costs $20-30 per card with a 45-business-day turnaround, though express services run up to $600 for same-day grading.
Going Deeper
Grading evaluates four key attributes: centering (is the image perfectly centered within the borders?), corners (are they sharp or worn?), edges (any whitening or nicks?), and surface (scratches, print lines, or dents?). BGS uniquely provides sub-grades for each attribute. Digital cards like those from MakeACard don't need grading - they're always in perfect condition - but understanding grading helps you appreciate what makes a physical card valuable.
“Grading brings transparency and trust to the collectibles market. A professional grade transforms a subjective opinion about condition into an objective, market-recognized standard.”
