You do not need Photoshop, art skills, or a design degree to make a custom Pokemon-style card from your pet, your selfie, or your favorite cosplay photo. You need one photo and about 30 seconds.

This guide walks through the exact process from upload to finished card, explains what the AI actually does, and covers the most common questions people have about the output. No filler. No upsell. Just the steps.

What You Need

One photo. That is it. The AI handles everything else.

Photo quality matters. A clear, well-lit image with one main subject produces the best results. Blurry photos work, but the AI has less visual information to work with, which can lead to generic-looking artwork. Dark photos sometimes confuse the AI about colors and creature type. Group photos work, but the AI typically focuses on the most prominent face or figure.

File formats: JPG and PNG both work. HEIC (iPhone default) usually converts automatically in most browsers, but if you run into issues, convert to JPG first.

No account. No credit card. No design software.

Step 1: Upload Your Photo

Go to the MakeACard app and upload your photo. You can drag and drop or use the file picker. The upload processes on the server - you do not need to resize or crop beforehand, though cropping to focus on your main subject can improve results.

What works well:

  • Pet close-ups (dogs, cats, rabbits, reptiles)
  • Portrait selfies or photos of friends
  • Cosplay shots with clear costume detail
  • Sports action photos
  • Family group shots

What works less well:

  • Screenshots of other images
  • Heavily filtered or stylized photos (the AI already stylizes; double-styling confuses it)
  • Extreme close-ups where the subject is unrecognizable
  • Photos with multiple competing subjects of equal size

Step 2: Choose Card Style and Options

After upload, select Pokemon-Style Card from the style options. You can also add optional seed text to guide the AI - for example, typing "legendary fire dragon" nudges the AI toward fire typing and dramatic artwork, while "cute electric hamster" pushes toward lower HP and a friendlier illustration style.

The seed text is optional. If you leave it blank, the AI decides everything based purely on your photo.

You can also choose between single card generation or a pack of 5 cards. Packs take longer (60–90 seconds) but give you the full collector experience of opening multiple cards and hoping for a rare pull.

Step 3: Let the AI Work (10–30 Seconds)

The AI runs two sequential processes:

Process 1: Card Concept Design. Gemini AI analyzes your photo, extracts the subject and context, then designs a complete card: name, creature type, HP value, two attacks with energy costs and damage values, a passive ability or trait, and flavor text. It also rolls a random rarity tier.

Process 2: Artwork Generation. A second AI call generates original trading card artwork inspired by your photo but rendered in a Pokemon TCG illustration style. This is not a filter or template overlay - it is a new image created from scratch based on the card concept.

The entire pipeline completes in 10–30 seconds for a single card. You see a loading animation with trading card trivia while you wait.

Step 4: View Your Card

When generation completes, your card appears with its rarity announcement:

  • Common (50% chance) - Standard border, baseline stats
  • Uncommon (30% chance) - Styled border, slightly better stats
  • Rare (10% chance) - Gold-accented border, strong stats
  • Holo Rare (7% chance) - Animated holographic shimmer, rainbow border, powerful stats
  • Secret Rare (3% chance) - Full-art holographic with star pattern, maximum stats, the rarest pull

The card displays your generated artwork, name, type icon, HP, attacks, and flavor text. Holo Rare and Secret Rare cards show CSS-based holographic effects in the browser - tilt your phone or move your mouse to see the shimmer.

Step 5: Export, Share, or Print

You have four options after generation:

Export as PNG. Downloads a 300 DPI PNG at 2.5 × 3.5 inches with 0.125 inch bleed margins. This is the standard trading card size used by Pokemon, Magic, and sports card manufacturers. The file fits standard sleeves and toploaders.

Copy to clipboard. Copies the card image directly for pasting into Discord, Slack, or image editors.

Share. Generates a shareable text snippet with your card's name, rarity, and a link back to the app. On mobile, this triggers the native share sheet.

Add to collection. Stores the card in your browser's local storage. You can browse your full collection, filter by rarity, and bulk-export later.

What the Card Actually Contains

Every generated card has the following structure:

  • Name: AI-generated based on the photo subject and card concept
  • Type: One of nine types (Fire, Water, Electric, Grass, Psychic, Fighting, Dark, Metal, Fairy) chosen based on visual analysis
  • HP: 30–150 depending on rarity tier
  • Attack 1: Name, energy cost, damage, and effect description
  • Attack 2: Name, energy cost, damage, and effect description
  • Ability/Trait: Passive effect that triggers under certain conditions
  • Flavor Text: One to two sentences of lore-style description
  • Rarity: Common, Uncommon, Rare, Holo Rare, or Secret Rare
  • Artwork: Original AI-generated illustration

The stats are balanced by the rarity roll. A Secret Rare card gets higher HP, stronger attacks, and more impactful abilities than a Common card of the same subject. This is intentional - it creates genuine variation and collector value across your collection.

Common Questions

Are these official Pokemon cards? No. These are original AI-generated trading cards styled after the Pokemon TCG aesthetic. They cannot be used in official Pokemon games or tournaments. They are collectible art pieces, not game pieces.

Can I sell cards I generate? Personal use is fully permitted. Commercial sale of AI-generated artwork depends on your jurisdiction's AI copyright laws. In most regions, purely AI-generated works without substantial human creative input are not copyrightable. MakeACard does not claim ownership of your generated cards.

Can I edit the card after generation? Not within the app. The AI output is final. If you want different stats, artwork, or a different rarity, generate a new card. Some users intentionally generate multiple cards of the same photo and keep their favorite pull.

Why did my card get a different type than I expected? The AI assigns types based on visual analysis: colors, shapes, context, and mood. A photo of a dog in snow might get Water or Ice type. A photo of someone in red cosplay armor might get Fire or Fighting type. If you want to influence the type, use seed text like "electric type" or "dark psychic creature."

Do I need to pay for better rarities? No. The rarity roll is completely random and free. There is no premium currency, no loot box payment, and no way to buy better odds. Everyone has the same 3% Secret Rare chance on every card.
