You can make an anime trading card from a single photo. Upload a cosplay shot, a selfie, or a drawing, add an optional theme hint, and the AI generates original anime-style artwork with a name, type, HP, two abilities, and a rarity roll.
The important part: the AI draws new art. It does not apply an anime filter to your photo, and it does not copy a character. The photo guides the pose, colors, and energy.
What the AI reads from your photo
The generated card picks up on visual cues:
- Costume and props - wigs, weapons, armor, and fabric shape the type and abilities.
- Pose and expression - a dynamic stance produces a dynamic composition.
- Colors - bright, high-contrast photos produce the boldest anime palettes.
- Framing - a clear subject against a simple background keeps the focus on the character.
Flat lighting and busy backgrounds produce flat cards. This is the same rule as every other card type, and the photo guide is the short version to read before shooting.
How the theme hint works
MakeACard does not have a style dropdown. It has a free-text theme hint, capped at 50 characters, and the AI uses it as direction.
Hints that work:

Short beats clever. The hint nudges the art direction; the photo still does most of the work. If you leave the hint empty, the card is generated from the photo alone.
Best inputs for anime-style cards
Cosplay photos. This is the strongest input. The costume already carries the visual language, so the AI does not have to invent it. Full-body shots with the prop visible work better than close-up selfies in costume.
Expressive selfies. Big expressions and clear features translate well. Neutral passport-style photos do not.
Drawings and sketches. Photograph your own character art and upload it. The AI generates a new illustration from it, so the output will not match your sketch line for line.
Convention group sets. Generate one card per cosplayer. Each person gets a free card per day from their own identity, so send the link around the group instead of running everyone through one phone.
Existing anime screenshots and fan art are the weak input. The model is tuned for real-world photos, and those uploads tend to produce inconsistent results.
The card format
Anime-style cards use the same format as every MakeACard card:
- 5:7 proportions, exported as a 750 x 1050 PNG
- Name, type, HP, two abilities with damage values, and flavor text
- Five rarity tiers, with Holo Rare at 7% and Secret Rare at 3%
- Holographic shimmer on the rare pulls
The holo effect is worth aiming for on anime art. Bright linework and saturated color sit well under the rainbow overlay, which is why a Secret Rare anime card looks better in hand than on a screen. The rarity guide explains the tiers and odds, and what a holographic card is covers the effect itself.
Printing and protecting the card
Download the PNG and print at actual size on 110 lb cardstock. The print layout tool arranges cards 6-up on Letter or 9-up on A4, and the card size guide has the exact dimensions and DPI settings.
For convention carry, sleeve the card in a standard penny sleeve, then a toploader. The print guide covers the full process if this is your first print run.
FAQ
Does the AI draw actual anime art?
It draws original artwork in an anime-inspired style: dynamic compositions, expressive subjects, and bold color. It is not a filter over your photo, and the result varies with the input. Cosplay, action poses, and expressive photos produce the most convincing results.
Can I make a card for an existing anime character?
Upload your own cosplay photo of the character and the AI will draw original art inspired by what it sees. Uploading official screenshots or someone else's fan art gives weaker results and raises permission questions. Keep it to photos you took.
What should I type in the theme hint?
Start with anime style. Add one more cue if you want a specific direction, like anime style magical girl or manga mecha. Keep it under 50 characters.
Do anime cards work with other cards in a collection?
Yes. All cards share the same layout and rarity system. Anime cards sit next to pets, selfies, and sports cards in the collection, and you can filter by rarity.
How many cards can I make for a cosplay group?
Each linked identity gets one free successful card per day. For a group of eight, send the app link out and let each person make their own. For a full set in one evening, buy credits and generate from one account.
Start with one card
Pick the cosplay photo with the clearest costume detail and the most movement. Generate that card first. If the art direction is right, run the rest of the group.
